چکیده

We evaluate the RC-time of edge states capacitively coupled to a gate located away from a QPC which allows for partial transmission of an edge channel. At long times or low frequencies the RC-time governs the relaxation of charge and current and governs the fluctuations of the equilibrium electrostatic potential. The RC-time in mesoscopic structures is determined by an electrochemical capacitance which depends on the density of states of the edge states and a charge relaxation resistance. In the nonequilibrium case, in the presence of transport, the shot noise leads to charge fluctuations in proximity of the gate which are again determined by the equilibrium electrochemical capacitance but with a novel resistance. The case of multiple edge states is discussed and the effect of a dephasing voltage probe on these resistances is investigated. The potential fluctuations characterized by these capacitances and resistances are of interest since they determine the dephasing rate in Coulomb coupled mesoscopic conductors.

Charge Relaxation in the Presence of Shot Noise in Coulomb Coupled Mesoscopic Systems

In the presence of shot noise the charge on a mesoscopic conductor fluctuates. We are interested in the charge fluctuations which arise if the conductor is in the proximity of a gate to which it is coupled by long range Coulomb forces only. Specifically we consider a gate coupled to the edge of a Hall bar subject to a quantizing magnetic field which contains a quantum point contact. The gate is...

Suspending Effect on Low-Frequency Charge Noise in Graphene Quantum Dot

Charge noise is critical in the performance of gate-controlled quantum dots (QDs). Such information is not yet available for QDs made out of the new material graphene, where both substrate and edge states are known to have important effects. Here we show the 1/f noise for a microscopic graphene QD is substantially larger than that for a macroscopic graphene field-effect transistor (FET), increa...

Shot noise in a harmonically driven ballistic graphene transistor

We study time-dependent electron transport and quantum noise in a ballistic graphene field effect transistor driven by an ac gate potential. The nonlinear response to the ac signal is computed through Floquet theory for scattering states and Landauer-Büttiker theory for charge current and its fluctuations. Photon-assisted excitation of a quasibound state in the top-gate barrier leads to resonan...

Shot-Noise-Induced Failure in Nanoscale Flip-Flops—Part I: Numerical Framework

As CMOS technology continues the path of miniaturization, noise-induced fluctuations raise heightened reliability concerns. In previous work, an analytical framework based on Markov queueing theory and Poisson shot noise was presented to model the probabilistic behavior of a CMOS flip-flop operated in the subthreshold regime. In this paper, this model is extended to also account for the above-t...

Edge effects in graphene nanostructures: II. Semiclassical theory of spectral fluctuations and quantum transport

We investigate the effect of different edge types on the statistical properties of both the energy spectrum of closed graphene billiards and the conductance of open graphene cavities in the semiclassical limit. To this end, we use the semiclassical Green’s function for ballistic graphene flakes that we have derived in Reference 1. First we study the spectral two point correlation function, or m...
